The Spicy Scent That'll Repel Raccoons From Your Bird Feeder
While bird feeders make a wonderful addition to any yard, they may attract pests like raccoons. Fortunately, you can use peppers to effectively deter these critters.
Raccoons rely on their sharp sense of smell to scavenge for food and avoid threats. Since black or cayenne pepper is both spicy and pungent, it overwhelms their sensitive noses.
You have the option to sprinkle the peppers directly onto the bird feeder or create a repellent spray. For the liquid deterrent, boil 4 cups of water with ⅓ cup of cayenne pepper.
Allow it to simmer for about 20 minutes, let it cool, and then strain it into a bottle. Spray your seed and feeder liberally with the mix to repel any lingering raccoons.
